Build with SwarmCompared
AI agent platforms in 2026, compared fairly
An AI agent platform is where you build agents, run them and watch what they do. They split three ways: visual builders for business teams (Copilot Studio, Relevance AI, n8n, Dify), managed clouds for agents you write in code (Google, AWS, LangSmith), and open-source software you run yourself (Swarm, OpenHands, the CrewAI and OpenAI frameworks). Pick by who builds the agents and where your data has to stay.
The short version
| Platform | How you build | Where it runs | Open source | Price, as listed on 28 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swarm | Your AI (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) drives it over MCP; or the SDK, HTTP API or CLI | Your own Linux machines | Yes, Apache 2.0 | Free; models on your ChatGPT or Claude plan or an API key |
| OpenAI Agents SDK | Code (Python library) | Wherever your code runs | Yes, MIT | No price stated; model use billed by OpenAI |
| Google Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform | No-code Agent Studio, or code with ADK | Google Cloud (ADK can deploy elsewhere) | ADK is Apache 2.0; the platform is not | Usage-based Google Cloud billing |
| Microsoft Copilot Studio | Low-code: describe the agent, drag-and-drop workflows | Microsoft cloud; needs an Azure subscription | No | $200 a month per 25,000 credits, or pay as you go |
| Amazon Bedrock AgentCore | Code, in any framework | AWS | No | Consumption-based, billed per second |
| LangGraph + LangSmith | Code (Python framework) | LangChain's cloud, hybrid or self-hosted | LangGraph is MIT; LangSmith is commercial | LangSmith from $0; Plus $39 per seat a month |
| CrewAI | Code, or the no-code Crew Studio | Your code; AMP is managed | Framework is MIT; AMP is commercial | Free with 50 executions a month; Enterprise custom |
| n8n | Visual workflow canvas, with code steps | Self-hosted or n8n Cloud | Source-available (Sustainable Use License) | From €20 a month, billed yearly; free self-hosted Community edition |
| Dify | Visual canvas | Self-hosted or Dify Cloud | Apache 2.0 with added conditions | Free sandbox; Professional $590 a year |
| OpenHands | Ready-made coding agent; Python SDK for your own | Your machine by default, or OpenHands Cloud | Yes, MIT | Free to self-host; Teams $500 a month |
| Relevance AI | No-code builder and visual canvas | Hosted | Not stated | Enterprise only, talk to sales |

Three kinds of platform
Visual builders for business teams
Copilot Studio, Relevance AI, n8n and Dify let people build agents without writing code: describe the agent, connect tools on a canvas, publish it to a chat, a website or a workflow. They suit teams whose agents answer customers, move data between apps or run sales and support tasks.
Managed clouds for agents you write in code
Google's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI Agent Builder), Amazon Bedrock AgentCore and LangSmith Deployment run agents you wrote in a framework (ADK, LangGraph, CrewAI, the OpenAI Agents SDK and others) and add identity, memory, gateways and tracing around them. They suit engineering teams already on that cloud.
Open-source software you run yourself
Swarm and OpenHands are programs you install on your own machines; the OpenAI Agents SDK, LangGraph and CrewAI are libraries you build into your own code. Your code and data stay where they are, and the models run on whatever plan or key you connect.
Pick each one when
- Swarm: you want agents that work in your own folders on your own Linux machines (coding, research, design, media), driven from the AI you already use, with your own workers, schedules and review steps. Not a fit if you want a visual builder or a managed cloud, or if you only have a Mac or Windows PC and no Linux server.
- OpenAI Agents SDK: you build on OpenAI models in Python and want a light, code-first multi-agent library. OpenAI's visual Agent Builder shuts down on 30 November 2026; OpenAI points to the SDK instead.
- Google Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform: your data and identity already live in Google Cloud and you want a managed runtime and governance for agents built with ADK or another framework.
- Copilot Studio: your organization runs on Microsoft 365 and Teams, and business teams should build and publish agents there without code.
- Bedrock AgentCore: you build on AWS and want managed runtime, identity, gateway and observability for agents written in any framework.
- LangGraph and LangSmith: you write agents in code and need fine control over state, branching and durable execution, with tracing and evaluation from the same vendor.
- CrewAI: you want role-based multi-agent logic inside your own Python product, with an optional managed control plane later.
- n8n: agents are steps inside broader automations across many apps, on a visual canvas you can self-host.
- Dify: you want a visual builder for chatbots, RAG and agentic workflows, published as web apps or APIs, that you can self-host.
- OpenHands: you want a mature, model-agnostic coding agent with a web control center you run yourself.
- Relevance AI: sales, support or operations teams want hosted agent "workforces" without code.
What we would check before choosing
- Who builds the agents? Business teams need a visual builder. Developers can take a framework or a platform their AI drives.
- Where must the data stay? If code or customer data cannot leave your machines, rule out hosted-only platforms first.
- Whose models, whose bill? Some platforms bill you for model use; others run on a plan or API key you already pay for.
- What happens after a run? Look for review steps, retries, schedules, and a record of what each run did and cost. That is most of the work once agents are real.
- Can you leave? Open-source code and agents defined in your own files are easier to move than agents that live only in a vendor's editor.
Questions
What is an AI agent platform?
Software where you build AI agents, run them and see what they did. Some are visual builders, some are managed clouds for agents written in code, and some are open-source programs you run yourself.
Which AI agent platforms are open source?
Of the ones compared here: Swarm (Apache 2.0), OpenHands (MIT), and the frameworks OpenAI Agents SDK (MIT), LangGraph (MIT), CrewAI (MIT) and Google ADK (Apache 2.0). Dify uses Apache 2.0 with added conditions, and n8n is source-available under its Sustainable Use License.
Which AI agent platforms can I self-host?
Swarm, OpenHands, n8n and Dify run on your own machines. LangSmith offers hybrid and self-hosted deployment on its Enterprise plan, and CrewAI AMP offers your own infrastructure on Enterprise.
Is OpenAI Agent Builder still available?
OpenAI says Agent Builder shuts down on 30 November 2026 and points users to the Agents SDK or ChatGPT Workspace Agents.
What does Swarm cost?
Swarm is free and open source. The models run on your ChatGPT plan, your Claude plan through Claude Code, or an API key, and every job reports what it cost.
