Use casesMCP delegation

An MCP server that hands work to agents

Swarm exposes MCP tools at 127.0.0.1:7783/mcp. An AI that speaks MCP (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) uses them to start jobs on Swarm's agents, wait for them, read the report, the diff and the cost, and merge the result. MCP is one way in: the SDK, HTTP API and CLI reach the same agents.

The tools your AI uses most

ToolWhat it does
swarm_run_taskStarts a job on one of Swarm's agents (coder, finder, designer, media) or delegates a goal to Swarm, which plans and splits it.
swarm_wait_taskWaits until the job needs review, needs input or ends.
swarm_task_resultThe report, the diff and the token use and estimated cost.
swarm_integrate_taskMerges a reviewed coding job into your folder.
swarm_send_messageSends a correction to the same job, on the same branch.
swarm_set_workflowAdds steps that run when a job ends: a reviewer, a send-back, your script.
swarm_status, swarm_activityIs everything all right, and what finished or failed since you last looked.

Connect it

Claude Code
claude plugin marketplace add swarm-agent/swarm
claude plugin install swarm@swarm

For Codex, your AI registers Swarm's MCP server with codex mcp add and the AI key; the exact line is in llms.txt.

The AI key is written to ~/.config/swarm/ai-key at install, readable only by you. Other devices reach the same tools over Tailscale; ChatGPT through OpenAI's tunnel; claude.ai through your own relay. See Connect your AI.

Not only MCP

  • SDK: @swarm-agent/sdk, the TypeScript client for chat sessions, workers, triggers, sealed agents and the signal feed. SDK docs.
  • HTTP API: the same routes the SDK uses, for any language.
  • CLI: swarmctl for setup and control on the machine.
  • Triggers: a token that can start one worker and nothing else, for your webhook or CI.
Say this to your AI

Every time CI fails on main, have Swarm read the log, fix it and open a pull request. Tell me only if it can't.

  • swarm_give_job
  • swarm_set_workflow
  • trigger token

Done. CI calls the trigger; a coder fixes, a reviewer checks, and the PR opens on its own. You hear from me only on a failure.

Questions

Which AI clients work with Swarm's MCP server?

Any MCP client that can call an HTTP MCP server with a bearer token: Claude Code (also as a plugin), Codex, and ChatGPT or claude.ai through a tunnel or relay.

Is the MCP server exposed to the internet?

No. It listens on 127.0.0.1 only. Other devices reach it over your Tailscale network or an SSH tunnel.

Can my own app use Swarm without MCP?

Yes. The TypeScript SDK and the HTTP API reach the same agents, and a trigger token lets your app or CI start one worker.

What can the agents do besides code?

The finder does research and audits, the designer builds UI and HTML designs, and media agents make images, video and sound with the models you connect.
